Learning & audience development: behind the scenes documentaries

Interview with Es Devlin, Set Designer

The Royal Opera House wanted a film to show behind the scenes with a set designer – to discuss how they came up with a concept, developed their idea and made it into a reality for the stage. The set designer was Es Devlin and the opera was Les Troyens.

Interviews are very personal and the subject is often very close to the interviewee’s heart. We research the production and person being interviewed to get the most out of our time with them and to get the most interesting stories for the audience.

Documentary with Mal Barton, Costume Workroom Manager

We filmed this documentary showing the revival of the beautiful costumes for the ballet Jewels. We interviewed Mal Barton who took us through the detailed process of bringing the costumes back to life from storage to stage. We meet one of the Royal Ballet dancers for a fitting and hear their thoughts on dancing in such intricate costumes.

With all our documentaries we aim to give a detailed insight behind the scenes, meeting the makers and Artists – to spark interest and excitement around a show, exhibition or performance.
